I suppose that that depends on the answer to, "subversive of what?" They were not subversive towards the Roman Government. Teaching that Jesus fulfilled the law on our behalf, and that we are free from its bondage would certainly tend to subvert the teaching of Jewish Religious leaders, most of whom were Pharisees.
